Hives Save Lives – Africa (HSLA) believes that providing an opportunity to earn a livelihood is the sustainable solution to poverty, and is the way forward from aid dependency to self-sufficiency.
We support beekeeping for income generation to combat poverty. We provide full training and access to equipment that is locally made to create further employment. We find solutions to the problems traditional beekeepers have faced in producing a quality product and bringing it to market.
Beekeeping is self-sustaining and does not compete for natural resources, such as forage and water. It is an environmentally sound opportunity for communities dependent on subsistence farming.
The potential earnings from a crop of honey from one beehive is over £40.00 a year, and when the average income is less than 60p a day, just two hives can make the difference between abject poverty and access to food, education and basic healthcare.
